How to Guide… Christmas in July

After scaled-back get-togethers, last December, we could all use a bit of Christmas spirit!

While Santa is on vacation, celebrating Christmas in July is a wonderful way to spread some much needed mid-year cheer.

What is Christmas in July?

The idea of celebrating Christmas in July was started by a girls summer camp in South Carolina on July 24, 1935. Shortly after in 1940, the theme was popularized by a Hollywood comedy, Christmas in July.

Since its inception, Christmas in July has evolved to include annual traditions such as a Christmas movie marathon on the Hallmark Channel, volunteering with the Edmonton Christmas Bureau, or throwing your own Christmas in July party.

With a summer twist on Christmas decor, food and music we’ll show you how to bring some Christmas festivity to those warm summer months.

Christmas in July Menu:

For a summer twist on a classic Christmas dinner why not try a smoked turkey or simply throw it on the BBQ

Traditional side dishes can include:

Tropical Butterhorn Trees

Frozen Christmas Salad

Duo Tater Bake

Sweet potato, green bean and barley salad

Crispy smashed potatoes

Lets not forget dessert! Get the whole family involved with Ice cream snowmen and get creative with some Christmas in July themed cookies!

These mains, sides and desserts are easy to make meaning cooks at all levels can make and enjoy a mid-year festive feast.

Cocktails/Mocktails

No meal is complete without the pairing of a carefully crafted cocktail or mocktail. If you’re a fan of the classics try the Slushy Cherry Old Fashioned or a Sparkling Apple Pie on the Rocks. If you’re searching for something refreshing indulge in Rudolph’s Tipsy Spritzer or a Frozen hot chocolate with a mint or cocoa liquor. Frozen Hot Chocolate is also a great mocktail or kid friendly beverage.

Christmas in July Decor:

To help dec the halls for the Christmas spirit why not try making a wreath out of red solo cups, pool tubes or drink umbrellas. In lieu of a Christmas tree try decorating a pineapple and set a table for a summer meal to remember with these Christmas in July Centrepieces.

Christmas in July gifts:

What’s Christmas without presents? A summer spin on a secret Santa gift exchange could look like:

Exchanging inspirational gifts to help each other get beach-ready.

Box exchange—a perfect way to relax at the beach or by the pool.

A “Summer Survival Swap” theme by putting together the most creative summer package you can while only spending a limited amount of money.

And for that hard to buy for person a flex pass to Glow is a great gift idea!

TIP: To help MC your gift exchange hire one of Santa’s elves to make an appearance!
